5 Reasons You NEED To Listen to The Word at Work

Posted in

With the fast pace of our modern culture it is easy to get swept up during the week and forget to keep our eyes fixed upon the Lord.

According to a poll conducted by Thinkprogress.org, one in five individuals are working well over 60 hours a week.  With that, the national average for hours worked in a week is 47-hours.  With nearly 30% of our week being spent at work there comes the question of how we can ensure that we keep our minds fixed upon the Lord while we work?

There are a multitude of different ways to ensure that you are staying Christ focused.  You can listen to music, read your Bible during Lunch, or post encouraging notes around your office.  But we have compiled a list of 5 Reasons that you should be listening to the Word while you are at work.  Check ’em out!

1) BE ENCOURAGED

Joshua 1:9 says “…Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (ESV)

How often do we get discouraged at work?  Whether it’s stress, poor results, or troubles with bosses, work can weigh even the best of us down.  In those times where we feel discouraged, what better way to be lifted up than by an encouraging word?  Sermon.net has an archive of over 1,000,000 sermons that touch on every issue imaginable.  Are you facing a particular struggle?  Use our Sermon Search function to find sermons relating exactly to what you are going through!

2) CUT DOWN ON STRESS

Philippians 4:6-7 says this…”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

How often can we use a reminder of this truth during our week?  When you listen to the Word while you are at work you are providing yourself with a constant reminder of this truth.  That God is in control, that He holds your life, your work circumstances, and your success/failure in His hand.

When we allow ourselves to release our worries and fears to Him, it cuts down majorly on the stress in our lives!  Listening to the Word at work can give us a tangible way of releasing our thoughts to the Lord.

3) COME HOME REFRESHED

It is a sad reality that many spouses and parents come home from work completely exhausted and mentally drained.  All we want to do in that moment is shove some food in, get out of the business attire, and kick our feet up.  But with that routine, do we end up neglecting the people that deserve the very best of our attention?  So often our spouses and children are in need of our love, our attention, and our encouragement, but work has sucked us dry.

Luckily, there is a way to change this perpetuating routine!  Washing your mind with the Word daily can ensure that even when the work walls are crashing in on you, you are refreshed and encouraged when you get home!

4) LEARN WHILE AT WORK

The Apostle Paul wrote this in 2 Timothy 3:16-17… “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Listening to the Word equips us for every thing that we may encounter during our day.  Whether it is a frustrating situation with a co-worker, a stressful decision to be made, or just glorifying the Lord in success, the Word speaks truth, correction, and grace into our lives.

5) BE A LIGHT IN YOUR WORKPLACE

If you are refreshing your mind daily with the Word, there will be a very tangible difference in your demeanor.  And that difference is bound to raise a few eyebrows… or at least a few questions.  This provides you with an opportunity to not only share your faith with un-believers, but also to share your story of transformation with other believers.  Our mission in the workplace is not only to reach out to those who have not heard the Good News, but also to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Listening to the Word at work can provide you a new and interesting platform to engage people with the Word of Christ.
